Externalize the inner critic. Cognitive behavioral techniques suggest that giving your inner critic a bit of distance — treating it like an overzealous colleague rather than an authoritative voice — can reduce its grip. When the thought "I don't actually know what I'm doing" shows up, try labeling it: There's that thought again. You're not arguing with it or suppressing it; you're just observing it, which takes some of its power away.
Talk about it — carefully. Research suggests that normalizing imposter syndrome in professional communities reduces its intensity. When high-performing people hear that their peers experience the same doubts, the shame around it tends to loosen. If you have a trusted colleague or mentor, try naming it out loud. You might be surprised how quickly "me too" comes back.
Reframe uncertainty as data. Feeling uncertain about a complex task isn't a sign you're unqualified — it's often a sign you understand the task's complexity.
