Leroy's own research suggests that one of the best ways to reduce residue is to take 30 to 60 seconds before switching tasks to write down exactly where you left off and what the next step is. This gives your brain permission to "close" the loop temporarily, freeing up attention for what comes next.
Use browser profiles or dedicated windows for different work modes. Keeping your research tabs separate from your communication tabs from your writing environment creates psychological containers. When you're in "writing mode," you're not visually reminded of the seventeen other things you could be doing. Tools like Chrome profiles or Arc browser's Spaces are genuinely useful here.
Build in micro-transitions. Before switching from deep work to meetings, or from email to a creative task, give yourself two minutes of nothing. Stand up. Look out a window. Let your brain exhale.
